About Me

I spent more than four decades in public service, communications, and regional leadership, most recently as Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, where I led a consortium of 13 local governments representing more than 2.6 million residents. During my tenure from 2017 to 2025, I guided the Commission's day-to-day operations, turned an agency deficit into annual budget surpluses, and established its first fiscal policy, including a Board-designated reserve. Before that, I directed the Commission's regional energy and sustainability work, including the Solarize Northern Virginia campaign, which resulted in more than 1,000 new solar arrays representing more than $27 million in private sector investment, and the successful push for Property Assessed Clean Energy legislation.

My career began in 1980 as a legislative assistant in Albany, and I went on to hold senior roles at the Town of North Hempstead, the Long Island Association, the Long Island Rail Road, the Nassau County Executive's Office and Legislature, and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. Along the way, I led communications for the Piedmont Environmental Council, a regional land conservation organization, and served as Community Affairs Executive at Inova Fairfax Hospital, where I launched a local-food and wellness initiative. Across these roles, my focus has been the same: translating complex policy into clear communication and practical results for the people it affects.

Public service has also been a personal commitment. I served as Mayor of Purcellville, Virginia, for eight years, where we earned a AAA bond rating (the smallest community in the Commonwealth to do so), doubled the Town's rainy-day fund, and placed nearly 1,500 acres of Town-owned land in conservation easement. I have also served on the boards of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation, and the George Mason University Research Foundation. Our work has been recognized with the Governor's Gold Medal for Environmental Excellence and the Siemens/U.S. Chamber of Commerce Sustainable Communities Award. I currently serve on the Town of Leland Planning Board. I hold a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from St. John's University.
